Movie Review: Jane Eyre

Mia Wasikowska ('Alice in Wonderland') and Michael Fassbender ('Inglourious Basterds') star in the romantic drama based on Charlotte Bronte's classic novel, from acclaimed director Cary Fukunaga ('Sin Nombre'). In the story, Jane Eyre flees Thornfield House, where she works as a governess for wealthy Edward Rochester. As she reflects upon the people and emotions that have defined her, it is clear that the isolated and imposing residence - and Mr. Rochester's coldness - have sorely tested the young woman's resilience, forged years earlier when she was orphaned.

REVIEW:
For starters, i need to mention i have not read the book so i do not know how close the movie is. Also, in case you do not like period movies, i don't think there is a reason really to read the review.

I would describe Jane Eyre as a really slow, moody and weird movie. In general i like watching old movies and but i didn't not expect the movie to be so dark and sad. The fact that Jane never smiles and she is not happy in general, and Edward had a harsh character gives the whole movie a heavy atmosphere.

I found the 1st half of the movie far more interesting than the 2nd half. Maybe it was because the characters were still new to me, or because you still did not know Edward secrets and it has a creepiness in, with the strange noises and accidents. But after you get used to them and learn pretty much everything, the romance i can't say it really made want to go on with watching. It's was like half and half for me.

On the acting i can't say it was something wow but it was not bad. The main actors manage to pass you their feeling and ideas and that's a good thing. What really tired me, was how dark and sad was the whole place. The house, the sky...everything. And also i could not stand the hairstyle trend of this period. It's just yuck for me, and i was really thinking how much more beautiful Mia Wasikowska was in Alice in Wonderland.

To close the review, i don't think people who don't like that kind of films will manage to watch it. And as for the others, just don't expect something like Jane Austen.

  1. Might I suggest watching the 2006 BBC Miniseries version. It's much closer to the book and Toby Stehpens is a much better Rochester. You actually get to see his happier side, as well as Jane's.

I had a hard time placing my feelings about this film after I saw it. It's pretty good if you've read the book and, otherwise it's boring and leaves out A LOT. Basically, it's a very beautiful film with lovely costumes and a few lines here and there taken straight from the book, but it doesn't really capture the mood of Jane Eyre.
